John Kelly Joins Berkshire Partners

John Kelly, former president and CEO of Crown Castle International Corp., has joined Berkshire Partners as an advisory director.


Berkshire Partners LLC, the Boston-based private equity firm, announced today that John P. Kelly has joined the firm as an Advisory Director. Mr. Kelly will work with Berkshire sourcing new investment ideas and serving as an operating advisor to portfolio companies.

Ross M. Jones, Managing Director of Berkshire Partners, said, “We have had the privilege of knowing John since 1998 when he was recruited by Crown Castle International. Under John’s effective leadership as President and CEO, CCI grew into one of the world’s leading operators of wireless communication towers. We are excited to have him joining Berkshire.”

Mr. Kelly led Crown Castle International Corp (NYSE: CCI) from 2001 to 2008 as President and Chief Executive Officer.  He remained as Executive Vice Chairman until December 2009 and continues to serve as a Director on CCI’s Board. Prior to serving as President and CEO, Mr. Kelly was Chief Operating Officer of CCI from 1998 to 2001. From 1990 to 1998, Mr. Kelly was President and Chief Operating Officer of Atlantic Cellular Company L.P. From 1995 to 1998, he was also President and Chief Operating Officer of Hawaiian Wireless, Inc., an affiliate of Atlantic Cellular.


Mr. Kelly serves as a Director of CCI and NEW Asurion Corporation, a Berkshire portfolio company, and as the Non-Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of FiberTower Corporation (NASDAQ: FTWR). He received a B.S. from Purdue University.
