Kosmix, a Mountain View, Calif.-based developer of vertical search engines based on specific topics, has raised $10 million in Series C funding. DAG Ventures led the round, and was joined by return backers Accel Partners and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
Today Kosmix announced a $10 million investment led by new investor DAG Ventures with additional participation from current investors, Accel and Lightspeed, giving it a strong cash position to accelerate growth in the marketplace. Kosmix’s health consumer site, www.righthealth.com , is now the sixth most visited health site on Hitwise and receives over 3.9 million unique visitors a month according to Quantcast, marking a 56 percent increase since its public launch in the fall. In addition, Kosmix’s newly released consumer auto site, www.rightautos.com , attracts more than two million unique visitors a month, making it one of the most popular online auto sites in the market.
“Today, there is an overwhelmingly strong demand to deliver content that is relevant to users and we are witnessing this daily on our two consumer sites: RightHealth and RightAutos,” said Venky Harinarayan, co-founder of Kosmix. “The new funding represents a strategic asset for us as we continue to invest in people, technology and distribution to achieve our vision of creating the start page for every topic on the Web.”
In the last three months, the Kosmix RightHealth site has experienced a 33 percent gain in monthly searches for topics ranging from diabetes ( http://www.righthealth.com/Health/diabetes-s ), to flu http://www.righthealth.com/Health/flu-s ), and autism ( http://www.righthealth.com/Health/autism-s ). Every health search produces a user-friendly home page featuring videos, images, news, trusted sources information and patient forums. Far richer than traditional search results, Kosmix provides consumers with a 360 degree view of any topic. The company expects to add more consumer sites to health and autos in the coming months.
