Phil Kleweno, a longtime Bain & Co. partner and the former chief executive of Princess Cruises, has been tapped to lead the firm’s Washington D.C. offices as a managing director. Kleweno began his career at Bain in 1985 in the firm’s Boston office.
Veteran Bain & Company partner, and former chief executive of Princess Cruises and president of Teleflora, Phil Kleweno, has been appointed managing director of the global consulting firm’s soon-to-launch Washington, D.C. office. This was announced today by Dave Johnson, regional managing director of Bain’s operations in the Americas.

Mr. Kleweno is a leader in Bain’s global Retail and Higher Education Practices. He specializes in developing top-line growth strategies for mid-sized companies, often those owned by private equity sponsors, in industries as diverse as consumer and retail, hospitality, media and publishing, financial services and e-commerce. In addition to his work in the private and commercial sectors, Mr. Kleweno is a recognized expert in the higher education sector, most recently leading a comprehensive turnaround at a major multi-campus state university, helping to resolve entrenched and protracted budget and planning issues.
Mr. Kleweno began his career at Bain in 1985 in the firm’s Boston office. He has also worked in the firm’s London, Moscow, San Francisco, New York offices, and was a founding member of the firm’s Los Angles office. He left Bain in 2001 to take on the role of president of Princess Cruises, a $1.8 billion division of parent P&O Princess Cruises, where he led the 14,000-employee company through the turbulence following the events of “9/11” and helped drive the eventual sale of the company to Carnival Corporation in 2003. From 2004-2006, Mr. Kleweno also served as president and CEO of Teleflora, a privately-held flower delivery and wire service company that provides products and services to its 20,000 flower shop members. There, he launched teleflora.com among other strategic and operational initiatives.
