The Deals VCs Have Missed

In his newly released quarterly report on the venture capital industry, San Jose Mercury News reporter Scott Duke Harris does an entertainingly good job of capturing the “woulda-coulda-shouldas” of Valley VCs.

My favorite story centers of Bessemer Venture Partners’ David Cowan, who visited his college friend Susan Wojcicki so she could introduce him to two Stanford students who were working on a new search engine from her rented garage. Cowan, who by 1998 had already seen his fill of search engines, politely met the boys, Larry and Sergey, but gingerly asked Wojcicki after his visit: “How can I get out of this house without going anywhere near your garage?”
