Urban Airship, the leading platform provider for messaging to mobile devices, announced today that Christopher Dean has joined the company as Chief Revenue Officer. Dean joins from Skype, where he held multiple roles including Chief Strategy Officer, and led business development globally. At Urban Airship, he will lead sales and business development, helping to maximize Urban Airship’s business opportunity as the mobile messaging platform of choice among brands globally.
Dean’s appointment comes on the heels of investments by Intel Capital, salesforce.com and Verizon. He joins recent hire Brent Hieggelke, who came to Urban Airship in December as CMO. Dean will be based in Urban Airship’s San Francisco office and serve as the lead executive there as that team continues to grow.
Dean has 20 years of experience with Internet and IP communications companies, and a successful track record working with early stage companies to align them with strategic partners, grow revenue, create new distribution channels and support the development and launch of new products.
Prior to Skype, he led several business development and strategy teams at companies including FaceTime Communications (now Actiance), Texada Capital, Epoch Partners, SmartAge.com, and Worlds, Inc. He was also a consultant at Regis McKenna, Inc., where he provided consulting services to Apple, Adobe Systems, IBM and Oracle.
“Urban Airship has the opportunity to take the leadership position in a new and important category of products critical to companies that are now interacting with customers on mobile devices,” said Dean. “The team is a blend of the very best technical, marketing and creative talent I’ve seen in a long time, and I’m excited to be part of it.”
“To be a truly great startup there has to be a combination of first-timers hell bent on changing the world, and been-there-done-that execs who know how to focus teams and leverage the best opportunities,” said Scott Kveton, Urban Airship CEO. “We get a little bit of both with Chris, and he will be a phenomenal addition to the leadership team.”
