


Los Angeles-based Ares started marketing the pool last November, said Bennett Rosenthal, who co-heads the private equity group with David Kaplan. After six months, Ares had verbal commitments of $4.7 billion and spent roughly the next two months tying up loose ends, Rosenthal says. The fund, Ares Corporate Opportunities Fund IV LP, ended up exceeding its $4 billion target and was oversubscribed.
Ares did not use a placement agent. “We were very fortunate,” Rosenthal said of the fundraising. “It went very quickly.”
While Ares wouldn’t disclose names of limited partners, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board, which acquired GNC along with Ares in 2007, is an investor, peHUB has learned. Also, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, which, along with Ares, acquired 99 Cents Only Stores in 2011, is also an investor.
Other investors, according to Buyouts data, include the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, the New York State Common Retirement Fund, Florida State Board of Administration as well as theIndiana Public Retirement System.
Ares Management, the global asset manager, has about $54 billion in committed capital. The firm has three groups: capital markets, which invests in leverage loans and distressed/stressed investing; private debt; and private equity. The private equity unit has $10.7 billion in committed capital. Ares PE focuses on investments in consumer, healthcare as well as business and government services. The private equity unit typically invests from $100 million to $400 million equity per deal.
There are currently several trends at play in the private equity fundraising environment. Mega funds are out of favor with investors and the crowded market is allowing LPs to become more selective. Rosenthal ssiad LPs are also consolidating their relationships with GPs. “We had bigger commitments from exiting investors,” he saoid.
Kaplan called the current fundraising environment “unusual.” “There is a good amount of uncertainty economically here in the U.S. yet there is an ample supply of capital available to finance the acquisition of businesses at high leverage multiples,” he said.
The strong performance of Ares’ prior pools helped the firm speed through fundraising, Rosenthal said. Ares’s third fund collected $3.5 billion in 2008. Fund III has a gross IRR in the mid-30s, he says. Ares second fund, which raised $2.1 billion in 2006, has a gross IRR of roughly 20 prcent, he said.
Ares also returned “a lot of capital” from Fund II and III to LPs, Rosenthal said. Ares’s Fund III has returned over 51 percent of total capital drawn as of March 31, Cambridge Associates said. It’s unclear what Ares’s second fund has distributed.
“Generally, LPs haven’t seen a lot of realizations,” he said.
One of Ares’s bigger exits is coming from the sale of Serta and Simmons bedding. Earlier this month, Advent International announced it was buying a majority stake in AOT Bedding Super Holdings, the parent company of Serta mattress maker National Bedding and Simmons Bedding. The deal is valued at $3 billion. Ares and Ontario Teachers’ will retain a minority stake in the company.
Ares has also been exiting its position in Lyondell Chemical and expects to make 4x its money, peHUB has learned.
