American Apparel, Inc. (NYSE Amex: APP), a vertically integrated manufacturer, distributor, and retailer of branded fashion basic apparel, announced today that Marty Staff is leaving the company, effective immediately.

Mr. Staff has served as Chief Business Development Officer at American Apparel since March, and he will remain available to advise the company during a transition period. As Chief Business Development Officer, Mr. Staff won significant new online and traditional retail business opportunities and oversaw the expansion of American Apparel’s offerings, particularly in accessories.

“Marty is one of the most experienced and capable professionals in our business and his contributions to American Apparel have been very substantial,” said Dov Charney, American Apparel Chief Executive Officer. “I have benefited greatly from his vision and insight. Marty is truly a dynamic figure in our industry and I wish him all the best as he moves to the next chapter of his iconic career.”

Mr. Staff said: “I have enjoyed my time at American Apparel and believe my contributions are part of the reason we are currently seeing growth in all segments of our business. I believe strongly that this company, with its unique business model, loyal customer base and commitment to American manufacturing, is one of the truly innovative companies in our industry today and is well positioned to succeed going forward. I look forward to exploring opportunities in fashion and am eager to bring my expertise and insight to bear on new challenges and opportunities in the next phase of my career.”

In a career of nearly 40 years, Mr. Staff has served in senior management at leading fashion companies that include Polo Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Calvin Klein and JA Apparel Corp. At each company, Mr. Staff has further cemented his reputation as one of the fashion industry’s most unique executives and a builder of leading brands.

Before joining American Apparel, Mr. Staff was President and Chief Executive Officer of JA Apparel Corp., owner of the Joseph Abboud brand. In March 2004, Mr. Staff led a private equity acquisition of the company, and as CEO he successfully spearheaded the company’s transition from a traditional maker of men’s suits into a global lifestyle brand with a presence in 55 new countries, including China, and an array of new products for men, boys, and the home. In addition, Mr. Staff maintained JA Apparel’s strong commitment to American manufacturing, overseeing automation and Lean Manufacturing processes at the company’s Massachusetts factory that helped keep the facility competitive with low-cost foreign manufacturers.

Prior to joining JA Apparel, Mr. Staff was President and CEO of Hugo Boss Fashions, Inc., President and COO Calvin Klein Fashions Inc. and Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Polo Ralph Lauren, among other positions. Mr. Staff began his professional career in 1973 at Bloomingdales as an Assistant Buyer.
