Mike Woollatt, CEO of the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association, is leaving the industry organization for Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System, PE Hub Canada has learned.
Woollatt told PE Hub Canada in an email that he is joining OMERS Platform Investments, the innovation arm of the $95 billion pension system.
The division, which includes OMERS Ventures, led by CEO John Ruffolo, oversees OMERS’ platforms in venture capital, special situations, energy, financial services, clean technology and renewables, and life sciences.
Woollatt will take on the role of director of strategic partnerships. That will make him responsible for fundraising, reaching out to potential investors, and managing existing relationships.
He is stepping into the new job at the end of the summer.
Woollatt, who joined CVCA in 2014, is the 44-year-old organization’s first CEO.
He told PE Hub Canada departing CVCA was a “tough decision for me, but the opportunity at OMERS is very exciting.” Woolatt added he is leaving CVCA in “great hands with an excellent team in place.”
Prior to CVCA, Woollatt was with Beaconsfield Group, a management consulting and public affairs firm he co-founded. He has also held executive roles at various Canadian businesses, including Bell Canada, CTVglobemedia, and Canwest Global Communications.
In a statement issued today, CVCA regretted the loss of Woollatt and praised his accomplishments.
They include raising the global profile of the Canadian PE and VC fund industry, doubling CVCA membership, and contributing to the launch of several public policy programs, including Ottawa’s $400 million Venture Capital Catalyst Initiative.
CVCA Chair Mark Usher said the board has begun recruiting a new CEO.
CVCA has more than 1,200 corporate and individual members, including the vast majority of Canadian PE, VC and service provider firms.
