Investment banks shop dozens of healthcare companies as 2019 revs up

  • Great time to sell healthcare companies as valuations remain high
  • Orthopedics a healthcare segment to watch
  • Nordic recently acquired Orchid Orthopedic Solutions

It continues to be a busy season for healthcare M&A professionals as they market more than 50 companies, including properties owned by private equity shops Altaris Capital Partners, Leonard Green & Partners and WindRose Health Investors, a roundup by Buyouts shows.

Sellers call it an excellent time to put healthcare companies up for sale as valuations remain strong, although the jury is still out regarding which sectors will heat up in 2019. While gastroenterology was an active segment in 2018, one new vertical to watch is orthopedics.

Orchid Orthopedic Solutions was recently scooped up by Nordic Capital while CORE Institute remains in the market. Other recent entrants in the for-sale market include Science Care, Crossroads Treatment Centers and Hospice Compassus. Several opioid- and other addiction-treatment companies as well as several radiology/imaging businesses are looking for buyers.

Buyouts compiled its roundup — see attached file — largely based on the fastidious reporting of our very own Sarah Pringle. We identified other targets via research from news sources such as Reuters, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes and other secondary sources. Our roundup file includes useful information such as current owners, investment bankers running the sale and Ebitda.

Buyouts also identified 85+ companies that appear to be excellent prospects to come back to market in the months ahead. They include Apria Healthcare Group, Riverside Radiology and PointClickCare.

The list of targets is based on our own reporting and by carefully reviewing the portfolios of active investors in the healthcare sector. Any current healthcare-related portfolio companies held for longer than four years by a buyout shop were captured in our list. Our prospect list includes several dental and plan management related companies, as well as a wide variety of service-related businesses.
